Studying in the UK is a dream for many international students. A British degree is globally recognised, offering world-class education and pathways into rewarding careers. But before you book your flight or pay your tuition fees, it is essential to understand the visa rules - especially if you are hoping to bring your family with you.

In this article, we explain the current rules for student visa dependants, who can apply and what has changed in recent years.

Can I bring dependants on a UK Student Visa?

Since 1 January 2024, the UK Government introduced new restrictions on student visa dependants. Under the current rules:

  • Only students postgraduate research courses (e.g. PhD, Doctorate, or research based master's degree) can bring dependants to the UK.

  • Dependants include a spouse, civil partner, unmarried partner and children under 18.

  • Students on taught master's courses or undergraduate programmes can no longer bring dependants.

This marks a significant change from previous years, when many taught taught master's students were able bring their partners and children.

Why did the rules change?

The UK government tightened dependant rules to reduce net migration numbers and to ensure the student route is focused primarily on study.

According to Home Office data, the number of dependant visas granted had risen sharply between 2019 and 2023. Policymakers argued the route was being used as a 'back door' for work migration, rather than its intended purpose of education.

What does this mean for international students?

  1. Postgraduate research students still have the opportunity to bring their families, but must show they can financially support them.

  2. Other students must plan their studies with the expectation that they will need to live in the UK alone.

  3. If bringing dependants is a critical factor for your decision, you may want to consider applying to a research-based course or exploring alternative visa routes (such as work visas) that allow dependants.

Financial requirements for dependants

If you are eligible to bring dependants, you must show you can financially support them.

Current maintenance:

  • £845 per month for each dependant if studying in London.

  • £680 per month for each dependant if studying outside London.

These funds must be held for a minimum period before the visa application and must be clearly evidenced through bank statements or official financial documents.

Common Questions about student dependants

  1. Can my dependant work in the UK?

Yes. Dependants on a student visa are generally permitted to work (except as a professional sportsperson or coach).

  1. Can my children attend school in the UK?

Yes. Children under 18 who come as dependants can attend state schools in the UK.

  1. What if I switch to a work visa after my studies?

If you later switch into a route such as the Skilled Worker visa, your dependants can also apply to extend their stay with you under the new visa category.

How to strengthen your application

Because dependant applications add extra complexity, it is vital to carefully prepare your application:

  • Ensure all financial documents are complete and meet UKVI standards.

  • Provide clear evidence of your relationship (e.g. marriage or birth certificates).

  • Double-check that your course qualifies for dependant eligibility.

Mistakes or missing documents can result in refusal - delaying your plans and costing you money.
